Embracing Change

We are about 2 weeks into the new school year, and I am finally starting to get back into a good routine. I have bought all my textbooks on time, figured out the quickest routes to get to my classes, and got through the long, dreaded syllabus week. For me, these are all very important and key things to start in the right direction. Thankfully, I have made it through and have continued to pick up right where I left off academically. Also, I have had to learn some new skills along the way, tackle various unexpected challenges, and completely redefine how I get through my days, as a Junior in the Apartments compared to a once underclassman in the dorms.

Living in the apartments has forced me to pick up a much-needed skill and ability, cooking. I have never been a great cook let alone a good one. After relying on and crossing my fingers for a good Macintosh meal in the past, I am now required to watch YouTube videos on how to cook certain meals to get by. I have also had to learn how to "properly" clean dishes along with using the dishwasher, which has been pretty interesting, to say the least.  In my opinion, these are the biggest adjustments heading to the apartments from the dorms.

However, the biggest change I have had to endure is living with a new roommate. For the past two years I had been rooming with a non-soccer player, but this year I decided to room with one of my teammates and best friends on the soccer team. In the past, my roommate and I had completely different schedules, interests, and cliques, thus making it very difficult to connect. For me, changing roommates and their personalities has been like going from quiet to loud, introverted to extroverted, and shy to bold. Thankfully, my roommate has been rooming with a friend of his for the past two years, so it makes me feel good knowing we both walked away from the situation feeling happy. Overall, I remain friends with my former roommate, but I'm truly grateful that things have worked out to let me room with one of my best friends and teammates.

Moving forward, I am going to continue to embrace change and tackle any challenge or obstacle that stands in my way. I look forward to adapting to these new changes in my life and I’m excited for another year here on campus!

  1. Hey Grant, I also have been forced to pick up cooking skills from the apartment. I find myself making things in the air fryer most of the time, YouTube videos are the best to teach me how to cook!
